Week 17: Finger Bowl 17 preview

DUBLIN BRAWLERS (11-5) vs. SERKUS ACT (11-5)
At Baraboo Senior High School, Baraboo, Wis.

The skinny: This year's Finger Bowl features the Finks League's last two champions. The Brawlers and Serkus each on division titles this season. Defending champion Serkus owner Stan Goff is attempting to become the first owner to win back-to-back titles since Matt Simo in 2001-02. Brawlers owner Kris Herigodt is going for her second title in two years after winning her rookie season. Herigodt beat the Barrels 29-22 in the 2008 Finger Bowl. Goff won 37-31 over the Sharks last season. Herigodt is 3-0 in the playoffs; Goff is 5-8. One of this year's Brawlers' probable starter, RB A. Peterson MIN, was the 2008 Finger Bowl MVP.

The stat: Goff is 1-2 in the Finger Bowl with previous losses to the Los Angeles Express, 34-26, in 2002 and the St. Louis Spirits, 36-18, in 2000.

Previous meetings:  Brawlers 61, Serkus 39, Week 4; Serkus 46, Brawlers 42, Week 7.

Probable starters: Brawlers -- Rodgers, A. Peterson, Hillis, Welker, Jennings, Graham; Serkus -- Schaub, Foster, Charles, Cal. Johnson, Austin, Crosby.

The pick: Brawlers 45, Serkus 43.

2010 FINKS LEAGUE SEMIFINAL PREVIEWS: WEEK 16

Dublin Brawlers (10-5) vs. Eye of Newt (9-6)
At Aviva Stadium, Dublin, Ireland

The skinny: Brawlers won their first division title and have made the playoffs for the second time in three years after winning the 2008 Finger Bowl in their first season. Newt's Jeff Newton is the only owner in the playoffs to have never won a Finger Bowl title. He has been to the championship game two times, finishing as runner-up in 2004 and 2006. Newton is in his ninth season and owns a 4-4 postseason record. He is making his fifth playoff appearance.

The stat: Brawlers owner Kris Herigodt is 2-0 in the playoffs.

Previous meeting: Brawlers 66, Newt 50 (Week 3)

Probable starters: Brawlers -- Rodgers, A. Peterson, Hillis, Welker, Jennings, Graham. Newt -- Cassel, Turner, Mendenhall, A. Johnson, Colston, Cundiff.

The pick: Brawlers 45, Newt 40.

Serkus Act (10-5) vs. Las Vegas Posse (8-7)
At Baraboo Senior High School, Baraboo, Wis. Home of the Circus World Museum.

The skinny: Posse owner has been calling his club "The Replacements" this season due to the overturn of his roster after a slow start to the season. A turning point was his 3-for-1 trade in Week 7 for Cymbe-offensive-line QB Rivers SD. Posse have won six of their last seven games to make a desperate push into the playoffs. Posse gained a playoff berth by winning the head-to-head tiebreaker over Creighton Barrels. Posse swept the season series.  Simo owns an 8-4 playoff record and has the most postseason wins in league history. He is in his 14th season and is one of two remaining original owners in the league. Simo is making his ninth playoff appearance. Serkus owner Stan Goff hopes to become the first back-to-back league champ since Simo. Goff is in his 16th season and is making his eighth playoff appearance. Goff owns a 4-8 record in the postseason.

The stat: Simo aims for a league-record fourth Finger Bowl championship, which would break his current tie with former owner Mike Wilcox. Simo won titles in 1997, 2001 and 2002. Simo is the last owner to win back-to-back league titles.

Previous meetings: Serkus 54, Posse 18 (Week 8); Posse 32, Serkus 31 (Week 9)

Probable starters: Serkus -- Schaub, Foster, Charles, Cal. Johnson, Austin, Suisham. Posse -- Rivers, McCoy, F. Jackson, V. Jackson, D. Jackson, Kaeding.

The pick:  Posse 38, Serkus 33.

Week 14: Three playoff teams set

Congrats to Serkus and Newt on clinching playoff berths out of the Montana Division. The second team in the Elway Division is yet to be decided between the Barrels and Posse, aka The Replacements. Barrels will clinch with a win, but a tie would go in favor of the Posse for their season series sweep over the Barrels, 64-43 and 65-28.

Week 14 ended the playoff hopes for the Eggers, as owner Mike Miazga explains:  "The Ham N Eggers playoff hopes flushed down the toilet with less than a minute to go in the Houston Baltimore game when A. Johnson catches a touchdown pass.

"I had a 7-point lead going into the Monday night DH....Bradshaw got 11 points for me in the early game. I'm leading by 18 now. I turned the computer off when Baltimore
was leading 28-10 or 21-10 or something. I did not notice or want to know what quarter it was.

"I got up early this morning and saw the score and thought I could be in trouble. And I was. A. Johnson 2 touchdowns and 140 and Cundiff 4 extra points. That last Johnson
score brings it from a 3-point HNE lead to a Newton win.

"Nice win, Jeff. You have a good team. Good luck the rest of the way.

HNE, which has lost 3 contests by 2, 2, and 3 points, will now try to finish the season with a winning record (something that hasn't occurred in a long time)."

Week 13: Congrats Brawlers

The Brawlers' 62-32 victory over Quags in Week 13 helped the Dubliners clinch the first playoff berth in the 2010 Finks League season. The Brawlers need another win in Week 14 over the Sharks to clinch a division title.

Five other teams have playoff hopes that will be partly decided in Week 14.

Musings from other owners around the league on Week 13:

Eggers' Miazga: "I show a Barrels 55-45 win thanks to T. Brady's MNF 19-point performance....I had 18 points on the bench in that game.....(Green Ellis had 2 scores and Branch had 1 TD), but
Branch being in the lineup would have only made up 6 of the 10....Green-Ellis instead of Bradshaw would have cost me 3 points, so I blame this loss squarely on
Chris Johnson turning in another pathetic fantasy effort. And I'm sure I'll start him again this week fearing he might actually do something productive."
Barrels' Traczek: "Creighton Barrels weren't feeling too confident facing a 30-0 deficit following another Michael Vick tour de force and David Akers' kicking on Thursday night, but we got back into it thanks to Brandon Jacobs' 17-point effort on Sunday, TDs from Matt Forte and Terrell Owens, and Dan Carpenter's crossbar-scraping 60-yard FG, though a victory would have been assured if I had started Sydney Rice (17 points) instead of Owens--a choice that came down to a coin flip on Sunday morning. I also left big points on the bench from Anquan Boldin (11), LeGarrette Blount (11) and Darren McFadden (9). So, it all meant that Tom Brady had to bail me out again, and for the second time in 4 games he did just that--against the NFL's No. 3 defense, no less. Sometimes this fantasy football can be fun!"

Week 11: A review

Serkus owner Stan Goff comments on his win over Newt: "I see a 56-47 win for me, thanks to Big Ben's 20 points and Foster's 15 (along with TDs from Dez Bryant and Calvin Johnson)...I survived a zero from Gore and a mistake to bench Miles Austin the week he gets 2 TDs.

A normal game from Andre Johnson and you would have beaten me....Happy Thanksgiving to all! I will be in New York for work Nov. 27-30 (at a convention on a Sunday while football games are being played---but with the Cowboys playing Thursday I will get to see them and also will have to turn in my lineup by then)."

Week 10: A review

Random thoughts around the League from owners:

Serkus' Stan Goff: "Thanks DJ...I got sidetracked and kinda forgot...I was nervous about all the TDs last night but looks like Moss did not score any points amazingly. I have Vick in another league but wasn't smart enough to use Mr. 6 TDs.

Actually, DJ I think Manning may have gotten you 15 points for his 2 TDS and topping the 350-yard mark for 9 more points,  new this season."

Eggers' Mike Miazga: "Comeback of the century. I trailed 29--0  after Thursday and 29-11 going into Monday night (I had only Chris Johnson's 11 points).

Vick scores 34 points by himself (333, 4 TD, 2 Rush TD, 80 yards rushing) and Akers kicks 8 PAT and a 40-something FG for 13."

Barrels' Chris Traczek: "Things were looking bleak for the Creighton Barrels as they faced a 40-21 deficit (why didn’t I start Brandon Lloyd?) against the Dublin Brawlers with only Tom Brady left to play against the supposedly vaunted (but undoubtedly cheap-shot) Pittsburgh defense on Sunday night. But Brady shook off a season-long stretch of blah performances with a 24-point game, highlighted by 350 yards passing (this owner’s first chance to take advantage of the new expanded scoring rules) and a 3-yard touchdown run to post a come-from-behind 45-40 victory that completes a season sweep of the division leaders and hopefully gives a much-needed jolt to the Barrels’ playoff chances."

Week 9: A Review

What's it like to participate in a Finks League matchup with your wife? Eggers owner Mike Miazga did in back-to-back weeks with Brawlers owner Kris Herigodt. Husband-and-wife split their games.

Miazga gives us a summary: "Brawlers take the Household Bowl round 2 by a 46-39 count. HNE took a 39-23 lead into the Sunday night game, but Rodgers and Jennings combined to score as many points (23) as
Kris' entire team had up to that point. This is one of those could, have, should, have type games. If I start Akers and S. Johnson instead of Janikowski and Maclin I have 47 points, though if Kris starts Cle's Hillis (180-plus rushing and 2 scores), she blows me out by a good margin."

Week 8: Review

The anticipated first showdown between husband and wife Mike Miazga (Eggers) and Kris Herigodt (Brawlers) fizzled. The Eggers won 58-20 behind PK Janikowski's 19 Finks points. But the couple meet again for Week 9, which should make things interesting if the Eggers could sweep the first place Brawlers.

The middle of the season is confusing in terms of the schedule. Week 7 and Week 9 are actual randomly determined games. Those weeks determine the two opponents you will meet twice in the other division. Since Week 8 is part of a regular crossover week, it is possible to meet twice on back-to-back weekends this time of the year. I know Dah Commish's Cymbe will play Newt back-to-back in Weeks 8 and 9.

Serkus is looking to break away from the pack in its division with a convincing Week 8 win over the Posse.

Here is owner Stan Goff's take: "As far as the Serkus Act goes, thanks to 3 TDs and 23 points from Calvin Johnson, I won 54-18 even while getting ZERO points from Big Ben. I have an uneasy feeling about this 6-2 team....last year my .500 squad someone won it all, but I'm worried this one may pile up wins in the regular season before pulling a 'Cubs' and bowing out of the postseason quietly."

Mid-Season Report Cards

We're half way there without a dominant team and wide-open races in each division. Through Week 7, Dah Commish asked each owner to submit a mid-season report card on their team's progress with each owner providing a letter grade.

Here are the report cards from those owners that submitted one in order of the standings from best to worst:

BRAWLERS

I would give my team an A.  It has changed a lot since draft day, but the pick up of LT and Hillis have been great additions for me.

NEWT

The RB and WT positions have been strong but the QB has beem as unsettled as the Bears O-line.

With Stafford in the fold the area could be in for a shot in the arm. If not.....heads will roll in the coach and upper management positions.

With the disappointment of last year's playoffs still fresh, a Finger Bowl title is the only acceptable goal. GRADE: C

EGGERS

Once again, I might be the unluckiest Finks League owner in the league's history. A 3-1 start now smothered by three straight losses of 9, 2 and 2 points. All three losses could have easily been wins. I succumbed to Josh Scobee hanging a 27-point outing on me in one of the losses. This past week, Romo breaks his collarbone before the half. Kitna comes in and throws two more scores. If Romo could have waited to break his collarbone until after he threw his second touchdown, I would have won. Instead, I waste a 17-point kicking effort from Akers (making his first HNE start of the year due to Kaeding being hurt)
I've been hampered by Chris Johnson's ineffectiveness (I believe 3 games of 0 points this year), Tom Coughlin's insipid insistence in using Brandon Jacobs on goal line situations (I have Bradshaw, who has been a 100-yard machine this year but no touchdowns) and poor WR play/poor selection of WRs by the HNE owner (I knew it would be a weakness going into the season), but if I play SF TE Davis this past week, I win. If I start Green-Ellis instead of Bradshaw, I win. Both moves I thought about right up until kickoff.
I thought I had made two hideously bone-headed transactions involving IND WR Collie (the week after I cut him he went off for 200 and several scores at Denver) and SD WR Floyd. I feel a little better with Collie being hurt in recent weeks. And now Dallas Clark is fried for the rest of the year, so that's 33 percent of the starting lineup out the window, 50 percent if you count Kaeding, who had started the previous 6 HNE contests and had numerous double-digit efforts.
The good news I can't set a new low for HNE wins in a season (I've already tied the low-water mark of 3).
Hopefully a little luck will be on my side in the second half and I can turn it around. But I see I play my wife this week and that will end up being a loss, just because I have no luck and just so she'll be able to rub it in (I believe she leads the all-time series 2-1 or something like that).
But as always, I'm having a blast playing.
GRADE: C-minus

BARRELS

Would have invested in a case of Dramamine if I knew my team was going to be this up-and-down. Queasy feeling started on draft day when I emerged with an RB core that had similar (and unreliable) talents and injury histories. While Darren McFadden has emerged for the Raiders, his injury history (which was the reason why I didn't start him this week when he had FOUR TOUCHDOWNS and 165 YARDS RUSHING, costing me a victory) makes him an unreliable every-week starter, Forte is used at the whim of "Mad Genius" Mike Martz and Beanie Wells was last seen on the back of a milk carton, which means I am flipping coins, rolling dice, consulting palm readers, reading tea leaves (pick your favorite sign of desperation) to come up with an RB tandem every week (though Torain has been an astute free-agent signing so far).
It's the same story for my receivers, with not even Anquan Boldin a reliable every-week starter, Giant Steve Smith used at the whim of the flighty Eli Manning, Panther Steve Smith looking increasingly old and slow (and quarterback-less) and Brandon Lloyd sure to crash and burn eventually. But when I look at the players available, nothing gets the pulse racing. My QBs have been "blah," with Brady resorting to dink-and-dunk in the absence of Moss and Palmer looking to have lost it before this weekend's explosion against Atlanta. I signed Ryan Succop (had two PKs on bye) so he could kick six PATs this week (at the expense of not signing Dan Carpenter or Olindo Mare and their five FGs) and Neil Rackers is made redundant when the Texans fall behind 31-7 every week and need to score TDs to win.
Still, I stand 3-4 with some nice wins (58-31 to hand the Brawlers their only loss) and some horrible losses (70-14 to vb5ds and 52-23 this week to Eye of Newt, which--I remind you again--I would have won if I had played McFadden!!!) and somehow I've managed to have three POWs (though Boldin in Week 3 came in a loss). I even stood third overall in points scored entering Week 7, though I had by far "allowed" the most points of any team (287), a tally that increases greatly again after this week's shellacking. (Note to self: Ask Commish why Points Allowed is a tiebreaker, when WE HAVE NO FREAKIN' CONTROL OVER HOW MANY POINTS THE OTHER TEAM SCORES!)
In the end, being in the pathetic Elway Division still gives me a shot at the playoffs, which will probably afford me nothing more than a chance to upset Stan and his posse of Cowboys and Texans in the first round.
GRADE: C-minus/D-plus

QUAGS

The Hurricanes only play bi-weekly: winning on odd number weeks and losing in each of the even number weeks. They could kick themselves for their poor draft at kicker. Both have been cut by their respective NFL teams. Over because of a better than .500 record the Grade is a C-plus.

CYMBE

It doesn't get much worse than an 0-5 start. The auction provided few impact RBs and WRs. Only RB S. Jackson STL remains from that group. It's hard to believe my other opening week starters were P. Thomas, Sims-Walker and Colston in those spots. The numbers are grim with a total of 25 players that have been on the roster, including a numbing six alone at QB. GRADE: F-minus.

POSSE

The former Las Vegas Posse are the Finks League version of the NFL's San Diego Chargers as both currently sit a 2-5. It seems very appropriate then that Las Vegas owner Matt Simo is gambling big on San Diego's Philip Rivers and Ryan Mathews to turn things around in the second half. Simo has already replaced 75 percent of his opening-week roster through a trade and several free-agent moves, with only Mathews, LeSean McCoy and Matt Bryant remaining from the original squad. His is also in the process of filing a team name change with the league to be called "The Replacements" from here on out in hopes of jump-starting his player and duplicating last year's success. Stay tuned... GRADE: F

Posse, Cymbe complete major deal

Two teams with a combined 3-9 record pulled off the first blockbuster trade of the Finks League season when last place Cymbe-offensive-line agreed to send QB Rivers SD to the Las Vegas Posse Wednesday as part of a 3-for-2 deal.

Rivers is the passing yardage leader in the NFL with 2,008 yards and 12 TDs and was the leading scorer for Cymbe with 73 Finks points on the season. Rivers has scored at least six Finks points in each week of the season.

Posse sent QB McNabb WAS, RB F. Jones DAL, WR Nicks NYG to Cymbe  for Rivers and RB P. Thomas NO, who is currently recovering from an ankle injury.

"Rivers has done a magnificent job for Cyme-offensive-line this season; it is difficult to part with him, but adding a running back and wide receiver will be a key toward getting us out of last place," Cymbe owner George Wilcox said.

Week 6: Review

The Brawlers won again to extend their lead in the Elway Division to two games. The Brawlers are doing it with a balanced attack led by RB Peterson MIN and RB Tomlinson NYJ, but could their top point producer probably be QB Orton DEN?

Defending champ Serkus is the only winning team in the Montana Division. Who can emerge as the No. 2 team there?

Tuesday, October 12, 2010

Week 5: Review -- Hail to the Brawlers

The NFL may not know what their best team is, but the Brawlers (4-1) zoomed to the top of the Finks League Power Poll with a 29-18 victory over vb5ds in a matchup between friends and teaching colleagues. The Brawlers own the League's best record heading into the Week 6 matchup against the Posse (2-3).

Wednesday, October 6, 2010

Week 4: Review

Friends and fellow teachers Joanna Terracciano and Kristin Herigodt are a combined 6-2 to start the season. Their Matchup of the Week should be very interesting to decide the early leader in the Elway Division. Ironically, Herigodt's husband, Mike Miazga of the Eggers (3-1), leads the Montana Division.

Brawlers PK Prater DEN was named MVP of Week 4, but the Brawlers also earned 17 points from LT. Vb5ds scored a season-high 70 points behind 17 points each from RB MJD of JAX and TE Gates SD.

Friday Morning Massacre

Four WRs from Cymbe-offensive-line received their walking papers Friday morning. They are the scapegoats in an 0-3 start for Dah Commish's team. The four of them have produced a total of 17 Finks points through three weeks. In comparison, my four RBs have totaled 27 Finks points and QB Rivers SD alone has 43 Finks points. There is no great mystery to being the only team in the league without a win. The only position with numbers is the QB and the PKs have been average.

I will be interested to see if any other Finks owners pick up former Cymbe WRs. Desperate times call for desperate measures. I told Dah Commish's wife that 0-2 is not time to panic, especially when the rest of the teams in your division are 1-1. But 0-3 is panic time.

Welcome to Bearsgrades.com

My neighbor here in Darien has created his own website: Bearsgrades.com. I invite you to check it out.

He's a crazy Bears fan. For every game he's got a large inflatable Bears player ready to tackle anyone passing his house. Dah Commish's wife is threatening to take the family picture in front of it for a possible Christmas card.

Week 3: Review or 'Can I blow up my team?'

I didn't think it was possible, but yes you can have a winless team in the league and no undefeated teams. That happens when Dah Commish, desperate for win, watches PK Gould CHI put the Sharks over the top with two field goals in the final minutes of Monday Night Football.

Defending champ Stan Goff's Serkus suffered their first loss of the season, as Goff explains: "Well, Crosby got me 6 points in the big Bears win -- in my other league, I needed a Finley TD to win and he had one -- for about 5 seconds before a holding call. Anyway, with the points from last night, Joanna should have beaten me by a 51-22 count."

Does everyone know that this man (pictured below) will not be playing football this weekend, but will likely be on the links with one of his friends such as Justin Timberlake or Michael Jordan? Just so you know. Dreaded bye weeks have begun.

Week 2: Review

The featured matchup of the week between Serkus vs. Eggers never materialized as a Foster vs. C. Johnson showdown. Instead, Serkus' QB Schaub HOU went nuts for 18 Finks points.

From Serkus owner Stan Goff: "The big Foster vs. Chris Johnson showdown turned out to be a scoreless draw, but Foster's off day did lead Schaub to throw 3 TDs and close to 500 yards. So with Schaub (18) and Gore (17) leading the way, the Serkus Act reports a 58-40 victory. So my Fantasy season is off to a 2-0 start but my real-life Cowboys are 0-2 with a schedule that includes the Texans, Saints, Packers and the NFC East still ahead....when do the Blackhawks start?"

Our first trade

Good friends Kris Herigodt of the Brawlers and Joanna Terracciano of vb5ds pulled off the League's first trade of the season with a mini-blockbuster. Can you have a "mini-blockbuster"?

Anyways, Herigodt sent QB Favre MIN and PK Gostkowski NE to vb5ds for QB Rogers GB. Vb5ds chose to go with QB P. Manning IND as their starter and solved its no PK problem by getting one of the NFL's best. Herigodt upgraded at QB with Rogers over Favre.

Since both owners are in the Elway Division, the trade will be interesting with their two divisional meetings to come.

Real Men of Genius, Fantasy Football style

Week 1: Review

Defending champion Serkus Act jumped out to a convincing 55-33 win over Eye of Newt in Week 1 by having the luck or brains to actually use RB Foster HOU, who scored 27 points and was helped by the new expanded scoring key of nine points awarded for rushing over 200 yards.

As Serkus owner Stan Goff explains: "I wasn't smart enough to use Foster in my other league, but thank goodness I did in Finks play."

 And so, we're off...

Notes from our annual auction

Welcome to our 17th season of Finks League football. We also had our silent-bid auction for the 17th time and every year there is always something of interest. When I came up with the idea to start the league, from the beginning I wanted to come up with a way to avoid the long draft process of everybody in the same room, or some of you by phone. At the time, Matt Simo and my brother Mike were not living in the Chicago area so the auction was the way to go.

I still love it because I think in makes the Finks League different from all other fantasy football leagues. This year there were a puzzling number of bid sheets that lacked depth, thus I believe we have a record number of blank roster spots at QB, RB and PKs.

A few other notes:
  •   The most popular player by far was QB Schaub HOU (pictured right), who had three teams list him as their No. 1 QB choice: Posse, Newt and Serkus.
  •  The most exciting bidding battle was for QB Brees NO, the Super Bowl MVP. Sharks went with $27.23 and Eggers went with $27.02.
  • Everyone would love to have RB C. Johnson TEN on their roster. The Eggers made the highest bid of the draft spending $45.02 to nab Johnson.
Let the games begin. Good luck to you all.

One-ring Serkus

LAS VEGAS -- Serkus Act owner Stan Goff finally won the Finger Bowl's Abe Gibron Trophy.

The Finks League's longest tenured owner won his first league championship in Week 17 with a 37-31 victor over the Bellagio Card Sharks at the Sam Boyd Silver Bowl. Serkus was led by MVP PK Kaeding SD with 15 points, tying RB T. Jones NYJ's 15 points for the highest scoring total in the title game.

Goff, who came into the league in its second season, had previous runner-up finishes in 2000 and 2002. Goff won this year's title with a couple of his favorite players, QB Romo DAL and RB Barber DAL, from his beloved Cowboys.

For the championship, Goff earned $382.50 for first place and receives the Gibron traveling trophy for the first time.
