Week 17: Cleopatra reigns in FB19

Morris leads stunning comeback for title win

LONDON -- Anthony Munoz and Cleopatra RB Morris WAS scored three TDs and rushed for 200 yards on Sunday Night Football to lead a stunning comeback over the Ham N Eggers in the Finks League's Finger Bowl 19.

Cleopatra won 61-42 in Week 17 at Wembley Stadium to pick up the second league title for Dah Commish, the only remaining owner to compete in every year in league history. Dah Commish's only previous title was FB10, a 58-44 win over Simo's Los Angeles Express in 2003.

"Stunning. It's the only word I can think of to describe how I feel right now," Dah Commish said. "Before the Sunday Night Football game, I thought I was dead and buried."

The Eggers led 42-28 entering the NFL's final regular season game. In addition to Morris' MVP performance of 27 Finks points, TE Witten DAL added a TD for Cleopatra on SNF. Dah Commish won $378 for this year's Finks League title.

Eggers owner Miazga finished second in back-to-back seasons and earned $126 as the runner-up. Newt placed third with a 41-37 victory over the defending champion Distillers.

Cleopatra established a franchise record for $16 in transactions over the course of the season. The only remaining players from the opening auction to finish the season were QB Stafford DET and PKs Akers SF and Hanson DET. Stafford fell one point short of a franchise record for individual Finks points in a season, finishing with 185 compared to QB E. Manning NYG's total from 2012 when Dah Commish placed third.

Cleopatra's opening week roster included RBs Helu WAS, Redman PIT, D. Brown IND, Starks GB. Only Brown was on the roster to end the season. Dah Commish picked up starting RBs Morris WAS and Spiller BUF in the second week and managed to hold on despite losing WR scoring leader Harvin MIN to a season-ending injury after Week 9.

During the season, Cleopatra's roster included 10 different RBs and nine different WR/TEs. RB D. Brown IND and WR T. Smith BAL were released during the season only to be picked up again later in the season.

A note from the Barrels

Barrels owner Chris Traczek: "Was perusing the final standings and my disappointment in what I thought would be a good season for the Creighton Barrels was intensified even more when I saw that the Barrels led the league in scoring but were unable to even qualify for the playoffs. Oh, Fantasy Football, you are a fickle mistress...

Thanks for another gre...well, I can't say "great"...how about "memorably frustrating" season, and "Good Luck" to all of the teams fortunate enough to make the playoffs."

Dah Commish responds: "Nineteen years of Finks League and always a mystery. How does my Cleopatra team receive garbage RBs and WRs after the auction, make close to a dozen transactions during the season and then end up with the league's best record? Shockingly, my opening day RBs were Helu, Redman, D. Brown and Starks. Yikes.

Luck (not named Andrew) plays a huge factor. My league-leading defense carried me this year, but how do I attribute my great defense to our Finks point system? It just seemed my opponents each week this season were too stunned by the beauty of Queen Cleopatra at middle linebacker to be able to score any consistent points against me."

Week 16: Semifinal previews

EYE OF NEWT (9-6) vs. ANTHONY MUNOZ AND CLEOPATRA (10-5)
At Wembley Stadium, London

This season: Newt 41, Cleopatra 40, week 1

Playoff records: Newt (Newton) 4-6, Cleopatra (Wilcox) 3-2

The skinny: Newt is the only team in this year's postseason that did not appear in last year's playoffs, but Newt makes its second appearance in three years... Wilcox finished third in last year's playoffs... This is the first time a Wilcox-owned team has won 10 games in back-to-back seasons. Wilcox's only other 10-win team was the 2003 Finger Bowl champion As You Hike It. ... Cleopatra's top scorers, QB Stafford DET and PK Hanson DET, have 162 Finks points each on the season and are on pace to top QB E. Manning NYG (186 pts in 2011) as the franchise's all-time individual scoring leader for a season.

Projected starters: Newt -- E. Manning, Rice, Moreno, Marshall, Cruz, Tynes. Cleopatra -- Stafford, Morris, Spiller, Shorts, Witten, Hanson.

The pick: Newt 35, Cleopatra 30.

HAM N EGGERS (9-6) vs. LOCKPORT DISTILLERS (9-6)
At Lockport High School, Lockport, Ill.

This season:  Eggers 59, Distillers 39, week 8

Playoff records: Eggers (Miazga) 2-5, Distillers (Cassidy) 2-0

The skinny: The defending Finger Bowl champion Distillers clinched a division title with a win in the last week of the regular season and won the head-to-head tiebreaker over Newt... The title gives owner Dan Cassidy back-to-back division titles in his second season... This semifinal is a rematch of last year's Finger Bowl title match, won by the Distillers 66-61. Cassidy is looking for back-to-back Finks titles, following owner Stan Goff's back-to-back titles from 2009-10. ... Longtime Finks owners Newton and Miazga are looking for their first Finger Bowl championship. They have been owners for a combined 26 years, 15 years for Miazga in two different stints.

Search on for Khans owner

By Lyle Bel
Vogue Fantasy Football Writer

ULAN BATOR, Mongolia  -- After losing Sunday and missing the playoffs again since moving his fantasy football team to the Mongolian capital, angry fans have not been able to find owner D.J. Wanberg.

Sources state that Wanberg sought refuge in the United States Embassy, but diplomats pointed him out to local mobs. Actually, a 50-foot poster of a big red arrow was inserted through a space in the embassy fence and pointed right at Wanberg.

When asked at a press conference why the State Department would turn its back on Wanberg, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, "He's got a big mouth. He told the rest of the league before the season began to just give him the money then. Our diplomats don't have much to do there except work and Ghengis Khan film festivals, so they went overboard on betting. Part of the embassy is now a Denny's to pay off the debts.  I had to pay off Bill $50. That was unpleasant."
Additional sources state that Wanberg might be in hiding, preparing his team for the final week of the regular season and trying to finish with a winning record.

Reports list numerous Wanberg sightings including the Motel 6 in Pyongang, North Korea; near the frozen Coke machine at the 7-Eleven in Bensenville, Illinois and the Hertz Rent-A-Car desk at the Los Angeles International airport where between research for the season finale, he can get you a great deal on a car with satellite radio.

No video is available showing the hunt for D.J. Wanberg, but this scene from The Blue Brothers will give an indication of how Wanberg is trying to elude the mobs.

Week 15: The playoff picture

Congrats to the Eggers on capturing the second playoff berth out of the Lambert Division. The Eggers will play the at-large team out of the Nitschke Division, which is yet to be decided with four teams chasing playoff berths entering the final week of the regular season.

Cleopatra has already clinched the Lambert Division and awaits the Nitschke Division runner-up.

Newt has already clinched a playoff berth, but does not own the tiebreaker for the division title based on its two losses to defending champion Distillers earlier in the season.

Here's what to look for in Week 15 in the Nitschke Division:

  • Newt clinches the division title with a win over the Brawlers. If Newt losses, Newt will clinch the division with a loss by the Distillers.
  • The Distillers clinch the division with a win over Poodle and a loss by Newt.
  • The Barrels and Brawlers must both win to become playoff eligible and need a loss by the Distillers.
  • If Distillers lose and Barrels and Brawlers both win, they split during the regular season; so the tiebreaker comes down to points.

Week 14 update

From Barrels owner Chris Traczek: "The Creighton Barrels kept alive their tenuous playoff hopes with a critical 32-26 defeat of the Lockport Distillers in Finks League action this week. The Barrels entered Monday night's game with a 32-14 lead and somehow, with the Patriots scoring 42 points and the Distillers having three New England players in action, held on with Ridley and Gostkowski scoring 6 points apiece while Welker, who even added punt-return duties to his resume for the game, was shockingly blanked. The Barrels were paced by another incredible performance from Adrian Peterson, who had 19 points, 15 of which came in the opening quarter against the Bears. That was enough to offset a rare down performance from AJ Green (0 points) and 1 point from kicker Greg Zuerlein. The win means the Barrels will snag a playoff berth if they are able to knock off Hurricane Quags in Week 15 while the Distillers must also get upset by the Pink Poodle."

Birthday boy

Congrats to Distillers owner Dan Cassidy on his recent birthday.

Week 9: Another tie

From Barrels owner Chris Traczek:
The Creighton Barrels and Ulan Bator Khans battled to a 43-43 tie in Finks League action this week.

The deciding play was Marques Colston's TD catch in Monday night's game, which allowed the Khans to escape with a draw. Both owners can lament a whole slew of "what-if's": If Dalton throws for one more yard, the Khans win; if Green has one more yard receiving yard, the Barrels win, and to make it worse, for a moment Green was over the 100-yard mark, but that play was called back by a penalty. If the Khans start Fitzgerald (who had a TD catch) instead of Gonzalez (who had 0 points) they win; if the Barrels start Steve Smith (who had a TD catch) instead of Julio Jones (who had 5 points), they win. So, I guess with all of that in mind, a tie is a fair outcome. Still doesn't do anything to soothe the Finks-induced ulcer, which prompted this quip from Khans owner D.J. Wanberg: "During football season, I buy my Pepto-Bismol at Costco in the five-gallon drum. It's only $1.13."

Week 8: When both your teams lose...

The double whammy. Every fantasy owner loathes it -- when your fantasy team loses on the same weekend as your favorite NFL team. This year, my favorite NFL team has gone south with a historically bad defense for the Saints under a new defensive coordinator. Luckily, my fantasy team is having success in a rare season for Dah Commish.

Serkus owner Stan Goff relays his plight in Week 8 as his beloved Cowboys fail to come up with a game-winning TD against the Giants:

"AHHHHHH. That TD reversal at the buzzer had me swearing at the TV and scaring my dog. Cowboys would have had a huge victory and a sweep over NYG, and Serkus Act also would have had a big win.

Instead, I suffer through two tough losses yesterday.

Of course, each of the guys I was worried about injuries with I sit and they each score TDs (F. Jones and J. Graham). Oh well. I watched part of the game with DJ and he was like 'Man, Tynes might just be a a POW.'

I also changed my kicker at the last minute, based on all the scary weather reports...I had Matt Bryant written down (of course he has 3 FGs and 3 PATs) and I switched to Bailey due to storm concerns...oops. I was a very bad GM this week."

Week 7: Trudging along

From Serkus owner Stan Goff:
"Despite zeroes from Felix Jones and Dez Bryant, Serkus Act defeated Barrels 52-50.
I was led by Brees' 21 points and helped a ton by four field goals from the Cowboys' kicker.
Even so, the biggest key may have been Carson Palmer's 1-yard keeper after Oakland had a first and goal at the one and passed on giving the ball to the Barrels' Darren McFadden (who by the way was in the same college backfield as Felix Jones)."

Week 7: Winning with defense

Serkus owner Stan Goff commented to Dah Commish: "Congrats! I think it's been a while since you had the best record in all of Finks Land."

Dah Commish responds: "My Cleopatra team stinks. I've had to go Matt Simo free-agent ace to pick up RBs and WRs left and right. This is by far the most players I've ever used because my bids sucked. I got no RBs and WRs that I wanted. So far, I have carried 10 different RBs and seven different WRs on my roster. In actual matches, I have used seven different RBs in a lineup and five WRs.

How do I explain that my current fantasy success is due to my defense? My opponents are wilting when they play me. The most amount of points I have given up during my current five match win streak is 32. This can't possibly last."

Crossovers are coming

Just a reminder that the next three weeks, the midpoint of the season, is all crossovers between members of the Lambert Division vs. the Nitschkes. Weeks 7 and Week 9 are the extra weeks added in, meaning those are the only weeks where you will play an opposing team in the other division twice.

Not rolling out the Barrels

From Barrels owner Chris Traczek:

Has a team fallen as far, as fast, as the 2012 Creighton Barrels? After nearly setting a single-game scoring record with 81 points in Week 1, they have dropped four straight, two in lackluster fashion (18 and 24 points in Weeks 2 and 5) and two in tough-luck fashion (43 and 42 points in Weeks 3 and 4).

Prior to Week 5, ownership tried to send a message to the locker room by jettisoning its kicking staff (Cundiff and Barth for Zuerlein and Novak) and adding another maybe-I'll-catch-lightning-in-a-bottle RB (J. Stewart).

The problem has been inconsistency. Julio Jones was great in Weeks 1, 3 and (to a lesser extent) 5, but a ghost in Weeks 2 and 4. McFadden has been on a roller-coaster all season. Flacco was spectacular in September (when I admittedly stuck with Romo for too long), but then lays a goose egg in Week 5 when even an Andy Dalton-level performance would have gotten me a win. As a Vikings fan and proud owner of him, I am thrilled that Adrian Peterson appears to be fully recovered, but why were the Vikings handing the ball to Harvin on first-and-goal at the 4 on Sunday?

With all that said, I still like my team and think it's capable of a turnaround, but that must start immediately.
Regarding the so-called fantasy "experts," they are all stealing money, mainly because there is no accountability. For example, Rotoworld has Jones and AJ Green ranked as the Nos. 1 and 2 WRs for Week 5. When neither came close to approaching that level, were there any mea culpas? No, there was either excuse-making (the coaches didn't "target," this season's term do jour, them enough) or they just moved ahead to their (extremely flawed) analysis of Week 6.

Reminds me of that douche bag Jay Mariotti. For years he insisted that the White Sox would never win a World Series with Jerry Reinsdorf as their owner, but when the glorious fall of 2005 happened (has it been 7 years already?) did he admit he was wrong? No, he just wrote, "Come on, Sox fans, admit it, you thought the same thing, too." Like I said: "douche bag."

OK, enough of my ranting, good luck to everyone the rest of the way--and look out for the Barrels, they can't be nearly as bad as they've been so far (I hope and pray).

Week 5: Looking at the one-third poll

Bears coach Lovie Smith is famous for breaking down the NFL season schedule by quarters. I offer my Cleopatra team's analysis at the one-third poll of our 15-week Finks League regular season.

Cleopatra is 4-1 with smoke and mirrors heading into their biggest match of the season in Week 6 against the Eggers. Cleopatra ranks first in the league in defense (141 pts), always a dubious category in fantasy based on pure luck, and the team ranks sixth in offense (211).

In the preseason auction, I was outbid in both RBs and WRs for any of my major choices. My No. 1 QB was Brees NO and my No. 1 WR was A. Green CIN. Cleopatra lost its season opener, but then beat Serkus 49-23 in Week 2. With garbage at RB and WR, there was hope.

No other owner has made as many transactions. I have made a transaction every week thus far. I have another one brewing for Week 6. Unbelievably, I have carried nine different RBs on my roster and six WRs. Only one RB (D. Brown IND) remains from my Week 1 roster. My other RBs from Week 1 are a trivia question: Helu WAS, Redman PIT and Starks GB, who I believe has not played this season.

One of the challenges of running a fantasy team is gauging who to listen to for fantasy advice. I don't follow the NFL all that well to know what's happening out there. I need help. But anyone who calls himself an expert, is not an expert. Anyone can be an expert. All you need is a mouthpiece. The KFFL.com expert that had Starks listed in the middle of the pack among preseason RBs was wrong.

What is your experience with following fantasy web sites? Also, feel free to send in your own one-third season analysis as a blog comment or email finks1994@gmail.com.

Week 1 in the books

Thanks to all for getting Week 1 off smoothly.

Defending champion Distillers scored only 23 points and looks to be the front-runner for the WR Cal. Johnson DET sweepstakes. Owner Cassidy will have first free-agent choice.

The Barrels won their Week 1 match with 81 points. The league record for a single match remains 90 points by Simo's Chicago Blitz in 1995, our second season of the league.

The Week 2 matchup of the week is an easy one between the 1-0 husband and wife ownership battle featuring the Eggers vs. Brawlers. Good to you all.

From Khans owners Wanberg: " I didn't expect three zeros in my lineup this week although Colston, Bush and Fitzgerald were only a couple of yards away from giving me three points from each of them. Newton not being able to run the ball Sunday is making me nervous. But plenty of season remains."

Khans reach stadium name agreement

By Lyle Bel
Fantasy Football Writer
Good Housekeeping.com

ULAN BATOR, MONGOLIA -- D.J. Wanberg, owner of the Finks League's Ulan Bator Khans, announced today a new one-year sponsorship deal for the Khans' stadium.

The facility will now be known as Bayangol District Stadium (Bayangol District is an actual neighborhood in Ulan Bator) at Ex Lax Park. Wanberg was hoping for a higher class of sponsor, but with the season approaching he was forced to take what he could get.

At a press conference attended by no one, he said he would try to not schedule any promotions that might cause fans any discomfort or distress in their game day experience. He said  free Shredded Wheat day, scheduled for the game against owner Stan Goff, has been cancelled.

Wanberg's team is in its second year in the Mongolian capital.

Khans releases theme song

From Khans owner D.J. Wanberg: "I think it best that this be my last shooting off my mouth until the season starts. It's always best to back up what you say. But I haven't felt this good about my team in a long time!!!!!!!!!!!! Hopefully, I'm kicking ass and taking names!!!!!!!!!"

Welcome to Season No. 19

Thanks again for returning for another exciting Finks League season.

Getting right to the auction news:

  • Falling through the cracks: WR C. Johnson DET fell through to go unselected. Johnson is the No. 1 WR on many live draft boards, but did not carry a big enough auction number to go Sunday. He was on some owners' penny lists, but will likely be a top free-agent pickup after Week 1.
  • How 'bout dem Cowboys: Serkus owner Stan Goff's favorite team is Dallas. He picked up four Cowboys players in the auction.
  • Biggest bargain: The Brawlers picked up RB McCoy PHI for 12 cents.
  • Spirited bidding: Newt picked up PK Gould CHI for $1.05. One other team bid $1.01.
  • The hyphenate-award: The Eggers have Green-Ellis and Jones-Drew on their team.
  • Spirited bidding II: Barrels won WR J. Jones ATL for $9.07, topping another team's bid at $9.01.
  • No ties: For the first time in recent memory, there were no tie bids resulting in a blind draw for a certain player.
  • Pricey: This year's award for the highest player bid goes to the Khans, picking up QB Newton CAR for $42.87.
Good luck to you all this season.

Cheers!: Distillers win Finger Bowl 18

Nelson, Brees lead Cassidy to title

LOCKPORT, Ill. -- Week 2 free-agent pickup WR Jordy Nelson GB nabbed MVP honors with 25 Finks points to lead rookie owner Dan Cassidy to the Finger Bowl 18 title in Week 17. Cassidy's Lockport Distillers defeated Mike Miazga's Ham N Eggers 66-61 in a battle between owners in their first Finks League title match.

The Thorpe Division champions went 10-5 in the regular season and won the Finger Bowl behind QB Brees NO's 24 points and help from two other free-agent pickups: RB Lynch SEA (three points) and PK Nugent CIN (14 points).

Nelson becomes the second GB player to earn Finger Bowl MVP, following RB Levens for Traczek's Helena Handbaskets in Finger Bowl 6.

The two Finger Bowl teams tied the league record for the highest scoring title match, equaling the 67-60 championship in 2004 between Steve Cline's Ghost of Sweetness and Jeff Newton's Go For 2.

Cassidy becomes the league's fourth rookie owner to win a Finger Bowl, following Mike Wilcox in the inaugural 1994 season, Cline in 2004 and the late Jeff Ponczak in 2006. Cassidy wins the Abe Gibron Traveling Trophy ending the two-year reign by Goff's Serkus Act.

The Eggers were led by 16 points each from QB Brady NE and PK Akers SF, who also earned three points for a TD pass. The Distillers led 66-49 heading into the Monday Night Football game. The Eggers' RB Bradshaw NYG scored two TDs, but could not close the deficit with any bonus points.

Cassidy earned $378.75 for the championship win. Miazga takes $126.25 as runner-up.

Dah Commish was the winner of the 2011 Harvey-Ponz Award.

From Eggers owner Miazga...

A end-of-season concession from longtime Eggers owner Miazga, who was the runner-up in Finger Bowl 18:

"Where as Janikowski did me in in our second regular season meeting (I put in Akers at the last second Thanksgiving day and Janikowski then kicks 6 FG against Bears on Sunday), Nicks did me in here. I am currently staring at a written out lineup card that had Nicks' name on it originally. If I play him over Wallace, I win by one. However, I am not a fan of starting two guys on a team if I don't have to (Gronkowski being a big exception). That would have given me four of six guys on two teams. Nicks had been inconsistent of late and with the emergence of Cruz, I didn't have the greatest feeling. I didn't have a great feeling about Wallace, but figured with Ben in the game early maybe he could snare a 6 and get out of there, plus Cleveland is no good. However, I should have checked the weather in Cleveleand (extremely windy) and paid more attention to the previous meeting between the two (very low scoring Thursday night game). I went back and forth for a good hour Sunday morning on Nicks-Wallace and Gerhart, Benson, Wells (all turned in zeros and one was inactive).

Anyway, great win and another great game between us. You had guys that were red-hot the last half of the season and Brees was instant gold most of the season. Half of your starters were off the waiver wire (Nelson, Lynch and Nugent), and all played key roles for you. Hard to combat two players with 20-plus point totals in one game.

Where as I was the only Finks owner to score more than 60 in a game during the season and lose (to Distillers), I am only the second Finks owner to score more than 50 in the title game and lose (there was a 67-60 result one year).

Looks like we have the makings of a fantasy rivalry here. That being said, I'll probably go back to my normal ways and go 3-12 next year.

Looking forward to next season."
